Let me talk about the stories behind some of the finer collectibles of the Smith Estate. They are items that I know about. I will first talk about the three Persian Carpets
The Abduction
At a point in time I was kidnapped to a country far away in the Middle East somewhere. I did not know what country. I met a doctor who was a captive in this country for a while. Because of his profession and because he was disliked he was doing all sorts of horrible things that only doctors could do. He bought me, actually and he asked me what he could do with me.
I said if you let me go back home I will work to get you out of this country. He replied that he was being very badly treated and that life was intolerable and he would take a chance and let me go back home. To try to get the both of out of slavery. He warned me that I would very much followed and if I dared to not fulfill my part of the bargain I would be very badly treated.
The Proposition
His captors were freedom fighters very moral people. I offered them this proposition. You are freedom fighters working for the poor. There is big money to made in cottage industry. This grass roots level production. I know people who would be interested in cottage industry. I also have parents who are very much interested in getting Persian carpets. In the Old Country there is a great deal of importance placed on Persian Carpets. To them a home is not a home without these famous carpets. We also know an importer who imports Persian Carpets. If I can find a group of people who would be interested in tackling the problem of poverty by creating an establishment to fabricate Persian carpets the way it has been done for centuries where you are, would this gain our freedom?
The opportunity to create modern Persian carpets using the ancient renowned method involved a group of experts going into a troubled community and training important women to create these prestigious items. It would bring money, fame and respect to the community on an international level.
The Solution
My proposition was accepted and I went back to Canada to see if I could arrange things from there.
The idea was very popular with the people I knew and the Persian Carpet importer was delighted with the idea. He had maintained his connections with the Middle East and the project took off. He said the most renowned Persian carpets were actually created deep in Iraq. It was there that they would be most authentic.
The operation was a great success and to show their appreciation, three of the first series of carpets were created specifically for the Smiths estate.
The Problem Now
They are still there and they are now in a terrible danger of being irresponsibly given away.
Not only that, unfortunately this is some of the Junk that is to be gotten rid of so that the house will eventually go to someone else upon the decease of my parents.
I, for one, would prefer that the expensive collection of antiques and collectibles stay intact to preserve the heritage and the culture that the Smiths so enjoyed. They were collected to establish standards according to an international tradition: Standards of entertaining, Standards of the people that were allowed into the home. And standards of fine living.
